Meet my sister and co-author, Lisa Overton
Spring has made her presence known everywhere I look here in rural Kentucky. My chickens are laying more eggs in a week than they did the whole month of February. The grass is about to test my lawn mower’s prowess, always a challenge in spring because I give the wildflowers time to turn my yard into a meadow for the bees. The buds are on the lilac, and deep in the forest I discovered a leafless bush covered with flowers that resemble Japanese lanterns. My plant identifier claims it’s a rhododendron. I call it magic.
The ticks are out in force, and talking heads on the news claim locusts are on their way. Hopefully my chickens will enjoy snacking on them, that would be a victory.
Maria and I are working daily in the forest to clean up the downed limbs from the ice storms we had. We figure by the time we finish, like painting the Golden Gate Bridge, it’ll be time to start over again.
Shout it from the hallowed halls: both daughters are receiving college degrees this month: Larissa finally being awarded her Master’s in Social Work from San Diego State, and Maria’s earned her Bachelors in Business Administration from Humboldt State, both in California.
On May 29th, it’ll be 21 years since my nephew Drew died, and next month will be the 47th anniversary of the fire and my parents’ deaths. I think we’ll plant memorial trees for them here at the edge of the woods.
