October Blog – Fall is here!
October celebrates the season of pumpkins, a sure sign that fall is here! Pumpkins are everywhere, and you can enjoy pumpkin-spice flavored coffees, pumpkin breads and muffins; carve or decorate Halloween jack-o-lanterns; and for the grand finale, pumpkin pie for dessert at your Thanksgiving table. Did you know that pumpkins are a type of winter squash, and every part is edible! The smaller the pumpkin, the sweeter and better for cooking, and these give you the best pumpkin seeds. There are over 200 varieties of pumpkins that grow in the United States, with the traditional orange smoothie (orange, of course), ghostly white Cotton Candy (white), Warty Goblin (orange with green bumps), Porcelain Doll (pinkish), Kakai (orange with green stripes) and Blue Prince (bluish), to name just a few!
There is a welcome change in the air as brightly colored leaves dance in the winds and fall off the trees, blanketing the lawn while waiting to be raked up. It’s apple season too, as trees laden with red, green and golden delicious apples are ready to be picked and turned into tasty pies, tarts and applesauce or simply enjoy a freshly picked apply straight from the orchard.
Indian summer, with its warm days and cool nights allows us time to enjoy this beautiful season before winter arrives with the bustle of the holidays. It’s finally sweater weather, and what better way to enjoy it than to curl up with your favorite blanket and a good book, like The Fire She Set, which is available in print or on Kindle or listen to on Audible.
