October brings a decided chill, a welcome crispness to the air, as the days grow shorter. There is a quiet anticipation of cozy nights by the fire, holiday planning and that headlong rush into the end of the year. Cooler nights and mornings demand a warmer wardrobe and the tasks of raking fallen leaves and deadheading a dying garden are often the main activity in the early days of fall.
Everywhere are reminders of autumn: Trees paint themselves in stunning hues of bright orange, golden yellow and crimson red and it often seems they are in competition with one another to see who can display the boldest colors! In Idaho, hunting trips for grouse, elk and deer are underway and new recipes are always being exchanged for these special delicacies. A late spring frost earlier this year cancelled out the apple orchards and many other fruit and vegetable gardens, so sadly, canning is at a minimum this year.
But no matter what your favorite fall activity is, whether delighting in outdoor activities or watching your favorite football team win a Sunday game, don’t forget to share a good book. I recommend The Fire She Set, which is available for purchase on Amazon (www.thefiresheset.com) or at your favorite bookstore, and you can also read on Kindle or listen to on Audible https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Fire-She-Set-Audiobook/B0CN9QYJW7.
