June, 2026 – Memories

JUNE BLOG – MEMORIES

Before I was conscious of thought or fear, these words formed in my mind: “What has Mom done now?” I woke up choking. I tried to hold my breath but couldn’t stop coughing. My legs swung over the edge of the bottom bunk, ready to run. Help me,” she shouted. “The whole house is on fire.” She sounded completely awake.  In some ways, I have been stuck there ever since: a 17-year-old girl in blue-flowered baby-doll pajamas, sitting on a narrow windowsill, head immersed in a dense gray cloud of smoke.

Memories of the fire have shaped our lives over the past 52 years for me and my sisters.  Growing up without parents, in spite of having loving friends and family, alters your entire being and even your soul.  And now, it is 2026 and the June gardens are happily blooming and the world is a different place.

The weather looks delicious and I’m ready to dish it up in large scoops and the future looks bright, so it is time to live in the present and enjoy life, especially now that I am in my late sixties.  The memories still linger but joy beckons and whispers follow me…the best is yet to come. And, remember to take some time for yourself and enjoy a good book, like The Fire She Set, which is available for purchase on Amazon or your favorite bookstore, to read on Kindle or listen to on Audible.
