August Blog – Summer Time Fun!
August is here! It’s almost the end of summer so we cram in those lazy- day-fun activities and look to escape the heat and stay-at- home doldrums. As we transition from July to August, much of the country is experiencing high heat and humidity (with temperatures in the high 90so) lasting longer than 2-3 days, so it’s off to the beach we go!
It’s almost the end of hummingbird season, too. These powerful little birds arrive in our corner of southeast Idaho in early May and depart in early September before the cold arrives. We fill our hummingbird feeders several times a day to supplement their diet of nectar from our garden flowers. They prefer orange and red flowers and can consume almost twice their body weight daily. As skilled pollinators, they play a vital role in our ecosystem and are famous for their ability to hover in the air, fly backwards and even fly upside down!
August is named for Julius Caesar’s grandnephew, the Roman Emperor Augustus, and was marked by a month of festivities in ancient Rome. So go make your own celebrations! Plan some extravagant travel or simple staycations, and don’t forget to do something memorable and enjoyable, like reading or listening to my story, The Fire She Set, available in print, on Kindle or listen on Audible.
